Final Project Post

Originality:

We got inspired by the collage style of art. Although, while doing our research, we realized that most of these collages were square or rectangular. This seemed usual because through shapes and forms we get the opportunity to share so much more meaning through any art work. This is why for the final project we created three different panels that were shared on the side of the main collage piece. Two of them were heart shaped to show the happiness music could bring to someone’s life. On the other side, we created a broken heart shape so signify the more touching and tender side of songs that could be more emotional.

Meaning:

This art piece was mostly focused on how and why there is fandom around artists and bands. We built off our main subject “music and effect”. Then, we choose to go with a collage themed project. Then, we found beautiful word and lyric collages that were created by fan accounts. This connected all the pieces we wanted to propel our main message. Music and song lyrics definitely touch us all emotionally but especially these fans that feel connected to the various artist that sing these songs. They feel a deeper connection emotionally maybe because they could find themselves in the story the song is telling. The perfect way to illustrate visually the “music and effect” subject was through fan based art.

Title: Music and Effect

Work expertise:

We didn’t want to just print out these sheets of song lyrics and simply show them to the class in this format. We wanted to throw in our own little twist to the project and carefully pick and choose from the collage sheets specific lyrics. We incorporated only some parts of the fan art that we found was most significant. We also added our own personal creative touch to the whole project but adding colour to some parts of the structures.

Participation

I give myself a 11.5 grade for participation! I did miss more than 2 classes although every time I was in class I always asked relevant questions that could be helpful for everybody in the class. I participated in class conversation to make the group dynamic more active. I always arrived on time to class when I was present, I was never late. I did work during class time on my final project with my partner. I always gave in assignment in time before grading deadline.

Work-in-Process Presentation

Title: Music Fandom Art

Theme: How much fan clubs are invested in music and how this form of art effects them emotionally.

Approach: Through a collage format with a mixture of fan club sketches and doodles. All hand drawn and written. They specifically chose lyrics and draw small design to represent different words or song titles.

Reflections

Our Music Fandom Collage was mainly inspired by our Media Artefact project. We really invested ourselves in this project that we wanted to take it to an other level by making it our final project. At first, we wanted our media artefact project to be at the center of our collage wall and then work around that main source of inspiration. We hope to communicate the impact of music on the world. Many mouvements have grown or have been spread through song lyrics. Many people identify to songs because they share real life experiences. This is where fan clubs are formed. A group of people that identifies to an artists for their style and songs. It is incredible how this form of art can have so much impact on our emotional states. Through this project, we want to illustrate with the art of collage how invested fan accounts and pages are invested in music. The favorite songs in way become a part of their lives. I would have liked our project to be bigger. Although with the time frame that we had. Our team decided to create a “mini” format of the bigger project we had in mind. I would spend more time on the actual tiles and add more details to them (paint on them, stick more images and plaster them).

Project Proposal (Updated)

Our project will involve the production of a series of 40cm x 40cm collages that bring together handwritten commentary from music fans with symbols and images of the music that inspired them. The individual tiles will be thematized responding to different aspects of music fandom: two happy ones and two sad ones, all very different.

Music Effect: Music directly impacts each and every part of the brain affecting the human body completely. Why is music so enjoyable? Our brain chemistry is being affected while listening to music. Dopamine will be released while listening to a song we like, which directly affects one’s mood; they are happier. Researchers found that this reaction is the same as when two people fall in love. Not only does music affect our emotions, it also has a physical and physiological impact on it. It distracts your body from fatigue as well as increases your endurance, which may explain why we all need music while working out. This is not only the case for listening to music. In fact, playing a musical instrument actually makes you smarter, scientists say. Music plays a huge part in our day to day lives, influencing various cultures and molding modern society. This is why music is so present in each historical period as well.

Fandom/Fanbase: Fandom, a group of fans, of a particular person, for example, is characterized by a feeling of understanding and togetherness with other people, about the same topic. A fanbase is quite an important part of one’s career, especially in the art industry, since this can create a marketing platform for the artist. In fact, being able to communicate with people who like and support you, can only increase sales. Letting them be aware of tour dates and album releases is very beneficial to one’s career. Maintaining a strong and healthy relationships with fans is crucial to one’s artistic development, as well as their fans. Fandom is, obviously, very supportive and creative when it comes to representing their interest, and are gaining more and more influence. In this generation, a fanbase has more tendency to use social media platforms to, not only come together, but also make creative content. Many chose to create fan accounts, which consists of, most of the time, collages about a particular artist. It is also important to note that internet fandom has been around since virtual communication first saw the light of day. Therefore, this is why we are basing our collage around fandom. It is in direct correlation with how music affects an individual. By creating something based off of a song or album, this gives a visual representation of how it makes a fan feel, which is the primary goal of our project.

Sound materials: We were thinking about adding a sound component to our collage project to make it come alive. For the sound part, we would first create a “happy” playlist. For this unique sound effect, we would look up 5 different “happy songs”. Then, through an editing software we would pill up these songs to create one main soundtrack. This will at first feel like a cacophonie of tunes but will distinguish itself when compared with our “sad playlist”. For this one, we will follow the same production procedure as our first playlist. We will pill up 5 differents “happy songs” to make one final sound effect. Now for the integration into the collage project. We will have our first prototype at the center of 6 collage tiles. The first 3 tiles will have a close relation to all the feelings tied to songs that bring joy and happiness. The other 3 will represent all emotions tied to sad songs.

Handwritten Sign: Some parts of our collage includes handwritten song titles and lyrics. This brings a very personal touch to the collage because it is contrasted with digitized fonts as well. Looking at these “scribbles” that also include small drawings that complement the whole artwork. What is particularly interesting about incorporating this into our project is that, according to graphologists, how you write can indicate over five thousand personality traits. Being able to visually see what is being written or drawn, by a fan, may let a person know if they can relate to a creative piece or not. The size, spacing between words, the shaping and slanting of letters, as well as the pressure applied to write, can even indicate personal health issues. Though this is slightly off topic to how music affect our emotions, it is important to understand the psychological aspect of our collage.

Tasks: Our tasks are also split up: Angela is in charge of the research aspect of the project and Sabrina is in charge of the more creative side.

Culture Industry

The term of cultural production has evolved with us. The more our world changes the more it changes. If take a step back a few years, companies use to sell their products for what they are. In other words, for their true basic neutral form. For example, Campbell sold their tomato soup and claimed it was very good. Although, in 2018, brands sell their products based on a whole different dynamic. Every company builds a product for what the consumer wants. This crowd of people is often split up into groups (elders, parents, babies, teen, ect). They then mold their product to our image so we NEED it in our lives. This molding could be presented to us through the form of ads. For example, when we look at Apple, when they release a new phone they make 4 different ads for that one phone, why? To target different audiences every time. The term came from Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer. They had determined this mouvement that was slowly growing in the United States take over the European continent as well.

Proposal/Research Topic

Production schedule: November 14 (research articles, artists and art inspiration), November 21 (Preparation of the collage backgrounds and creation of playlist of songs) and November 28 (Collage of all components of the project and short description for exhibition)

Description: Our project consists of a montage of puzzle pieces that are plastered with a collage pattern of song lyrics. On top of these are stuck images that reflect the human body and world to represent the listener.

Media Artefact (Personal Response)

I personally find the collage part of the project the most significant. Through each doodle and word that is written, we get the sense as an observer to feel the emotions of the artist. We can almost know if the song is happy or sad just by the type of writting the person used while creating their artwork. The idea also that the different collages are a mixed of printed and handwritten words give the different approaches people have towards music. Some people highly identify to song or a specific genre of music. Although, on the other hand, we have some individuals that only listen to song when they play on the radio. The spectrum is very wide, and so through our collage we wanted to represent both sides. Now focusing on the central part of the project: the earth. The change of materials does symbolize reality and the human population. We wanted to bring a realness to the project and the reflective glass photo paper was definitely a statement. When we take a look at the collage in it’s entirety, we can clearly distinguish the planet popping off the background. As if the lyrics and song titles propelled “us” forward. They helps us share how we feel and relate to various situations or obstacles we face during our life time.

Media Artefacts Analysis (Angela Fusco)

Our project, The Effect of Music, is portrayed through a collage of various song lyrics. We chose to take on this type of project, since it is a visual representation of emotions one can live while listening to different songs. One lyric may affect someone in a completely different way then it does to someone else. Through different life experiences a person can associate a certain emotion to a song. The planet, in the centre of our project, is to represent how many people can relate to this phenomenon.  We added a heart, a sun and clouds to symbolise the various emotions one can live throughout this experience. As a corky touch, earbuds are hung on our collage; the planet, symbolising every individual, is living its own feelings. We got inspired by different artists, notably collage artists. Kymberly Keeton, known as an independent publisher and art librarian, is one of three people whose work grasped our interest. Raoul Hausmann and Man Ray’s abstract work also got us interested in doing this visual project in a more unconventional way. Marshal McLuhan’s Media Ecology, which is we discussed in class, is closely related to our collage project. He discussed how the medium d that distributes the information determines directly impact the way this person perceives it. For example, through music, many could say that the emotions they feel while listening to a band or singer perform a song live in concert would be completely different than listening to that same song on the metro through their headphones. Although through these two very different mediums, the lyrics of the songs are strong enough to still touch or impact the individual listening. When we take a look at the different fonts, we could see how some of them are digitized and other hand written. When we look at the hand written words, this could show the more personal association to song lyrics. On the other hand, the regular fonts are to show disassociation to the songs. This could represent people that are not as touched by music or simply don’t identify to this type of art. Two different types of print paper were used for our project as well. The planet, at the center of our collage, is printed onto photo paper to give it a realistic look and stand out from the rest, which is onto normal paper.
